What is hydraulics?

Hydraulics is a fundamental technology, which plays a key role in numerous branches of industry and technical applications. The term is derived from the ancient Greek words “hydro” (water) and “aulos” (pipe). At its core Hydraulics deals with the flow behavior of fluids and their use for power and energy transmission.

Basic principle of hydraulics

The basic principle of hydraulics is based on Pascal’s law: Pressure exerted on a fluid in a closed system is distributed evenly in all directions. This enables the efficient transmission of forces over long distances and the multiplication of forces.

Variants of hydraulic power transmission

There are three main variants of hydraulic power transmission:

  • Hydrodynamic drive
  • Viscous coupling
  • Hydrostatic drive

The hydrostatic drive is primarily used for construction machinery, as it enables infinitely variable adjustment of the output-side speed.

Hydraulic fluids

Hydraulic fluids are special pressure fluids that are used as media for transmission of energy or signals in hydraulic systems. Mineral oils are typically used according to DIN 51524 Part 2 HLP, but other liquids such as biodegradable oils or water-glycol mixtures can also be used.
